Assistive Technology in Paediatric Occupational Therapy

Through the power of assistive technology, a child is able to have the tools they need to actively participate in their daily activities and also have the ability to dynamically interact with the world around them. Assistive technology empowers children to navigate their environments, communicate, and engage in meaningful activities with independence and confidence.

  • Understanding Assistive Technology:


Assistive technology includes a range of devices, tools, and software designed to support individuals with disabilities and improve their functional capabilities. For children receiving occupational therapy, assistive technology bridges the gap between their abilities and the activities they desire to perform. It serves as an empowering addition, enabling them to overcome obstacles and participate actively in everyday life.


  • A few different types of Assistive Technology in Paediatric Occupational Therapy:

o Mobility Devices: Mobility aids, such as wheelchairs, and adaptive strollers, provide children with physical challenges the freedom to explore their environment and engage in social interactions such as play or other daily activities.

o Adaptive Tools: Adaptive utensils, pencil grips, and button hooks are examples of adaptive tools that make daily activities, like eating and dressing, more adaptable for children with fine motor difficulties.

o Communication Devices: Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices help non-verbal children express their thoughts, needs, and emotions, promoting communication and social interaction. AAC devices are prescribed by registered speech pathologists, but often occupational therapist involvement is required to provide recommendations on visual motor skills, hand and fine motor ability and motor planning support.

o Sensory Aids: Sensory integration tools, like weighted blankets and noise-cancelling headphones, help children with sensory processing challenges regulate their responses to sensory stimuli.

o Computer and Tablet Software: Specialised software and applications cater to various learning styles and cognitive abilities, supporting children with learning challenges in educational settings.




  • How Assistive Technology Increases Participation in Daily Activities:


o Independence: Assistive technology promotes independence, enabling children to perform tasks and activities on their own terms. This newfound autonomy may lead to improved self-esteem and confidence.

o Inclusion: By equipping children with the right tools, assistive technology promotes inclusivity in school, social settings, and the community, allowing them to fully participate alongside their peers.




o Reduces Barriers: Children with physical, cognitive, or sensory challenges often may encounter barriers that can hinder participation. Assistive technology can break down these barriers and may open doors to some previously inaccessible opportunities.

o Customisation: It is important to note that assistive technology can also be tailored to each child's unique needs and preferences! This helps to ensure that the devices are both effective and comfortable to use.
